The Baseline
Of 176,208 AI agents indexed on-chain across 14 blockchains, only 68 earn a passing Treebeard grade. Zero earn a B or above. This is the baseline. Every Friday at 10am ET, we publish what moved.
Every Friday, we publish a snapshot of the on-chain AI agent economy — what moved, what shipped, where the quality is, and where it isn't. This is Issue #1. There are no week-over-week deltas yet because there's no prior week to compare against. Issue #2 is when the weekly signal starts.
Snapshot
As of this morning, Treebeard has rated 176,208 AI agents across 14 blockchains. The grade distribution:
| Grade | Share | Agents |
|---|---|---|
| B- or above | 0.005% | 8 |
| C+ / C / C- | 0.03% | 60 |
| D | 46.4% | ~82,000 |
| F | 53.6% | ~94,000 |
Grades follow the Treebeard rating scale. Full methodology and calculation process are public.
The Shape of the Economy
Most agents registered on-chain today are either inactive, unsafe, or have too few signals to rate with confidence. More than half are currently rated F — unsafe or inactive. Combined, the top three grade tiers (C- or better) represent less than 0.05% of the field.
This is the market gap Treebeard exists to close, by helping developers make their agents more trustworthy.
Climbers and Fallers
Not in Issue #1. Week-over-week grade movement requires a prior snapshot, and this is the first snapshot. Starting Issue #2 (April 24), we'll publish:
Climbers — agents that moved up a tier this week, named and tagged on X where a verified handle exists.
Fallers — aggregate counts only (e.g. "5 agents dropped out of C tier"). We don't publicly name individual agents that fell, for the same reason credit rating agencies don't put logos on downgrades.
Shipped This Week
Public X presence. The @TreebeardAI account went live. Launch thread and pinned motion graphic are on profile.
Embeddable rating widget. Any agent developer can now drop their live Treebeard score on their own site with a one-line script tag.
"Improve Your Rating" page. A builder-first diagnostic: for every grade tier and every category, exactly what pushes a score up. We designed this as the counterpart to the rating — grade without a path forward is just criticism.
175K agent milestone. Crossed it this week. The indexing backlog on Base and Ethereum is now caught up through April 16.
What's Coming
Issue #2, April 24 — first real week-over-week deltas. Climbers named.
Research Drop #1, April 28 — the bi-weekly long-form research series debuts. Topic: "Two weeks in — what we learned about where quality lives."
Daily re-rating — currently re-rates trigger on enrichment events. Moving to a daily cadence so weekly deltas capture genuine movement, not indexing artifacts.
For Builders
If you build an AI agent and want to know what it would take to move from, say, D to C+, the fastest path is:
1. Find your agent at treebeardai.com/agents (search by name, address, or chain).
2. Open your rating card. Each of the six category scores breaks down into specific signals.
3. Read How to Improve Your Rating for signal-level lifts.
4. Re-check on the next Friday report. Movement shows up in the climbers section.
We rate every agent the same way. No paid placement, no sponsored grades. See our independence page for the full disclosure.
About This Series
This Week in the Agent Economy is a weekly data update from Treebeard, published every Friday at 10:00 ET. It complements our bi-weekly research drops (longer-form analysis) and our methodology pages (rating process documentation). All data sourced from the Treebeard rating engine.
